Child Development Association Lions Wheel-Barrow Walk

Leaving Fanny Bay
Arriving Courtenay

The Baynes Sound Lions Club members and volunteers took part in a Wheelbarrow Walk Sunday, Nov. 3, a long-time tradition coinciding with the Comox Valley Child Development Association’s (CVCDA) 44th Annual Children’s Telethon at the Sid Williams Theatre.

$ 11,632.13      was raised by the Lions for 2019

The Lions started their walk at 8:30 a.m., setting off on a 32-kilometre trek, pushing a wheelbarrow from Fanny Bay, northbound on Highway 19A and ending up on the Telethon stage around 5 p.m. There, the Baynes Sound Lions Club presented the profits they raised to the CVCDA contributing to the Telethon’s totals for the day. The Club’s donation did include the Wheelbarrow Walk totals and funds from additional initiatives leading up to Telethon including the Fanny Bay Inn’s weekly meat draw for the month of October, chain saw eagle carving raffle and various community donations.

The community met the walkers along their route to show their support and contribute donations into the big yellow wheelbarrow. By the time they reached Royston at 3 p.m., Jacquie Miller estimates that 30-40 cars had stopped to donate money.

Money was also raised by pledge sheets collected by the Lion members previous to the walk

“We work together to raise money for the betterment of the community, said Lions member Jacquie Miller. “Some people walk halfway, lots of people walk the whole way, and it is a lot of fun.”

The route followed the old highway with a number of different rest stops, where the public connected with the walkers. The Fanny Bay Inn prepared the members and volunteers for the journey with some coffee and doughnuts then on to Buckley Bay. The walkers were provided with lunch at the Highwayman Saloon at 1 p.m. as they traveled through Union Bay then a quick refresh at Roy’s Towne Pub as they traveled through Royston on to Courtenay. Walkers  pit stoped at the Whistle Stop Pub before finally making their way downtown along Cliffe Ave. to the Sid Williams Theatre.
